Context, not a case finding

Gambling and the integrity of sport

The 1919 Black Sox case shaped baseball’s strict betting rules; the players were acquitted criminally and then barred by the commissioner, showing that league and court outcomes can differ. The US Supreme Court’s 2018 Murphy decision invalidated the federal PASPA bar on state authorization of sports betting. Legalized markets, league partnerships and integrity monitoring now coexist with athlete restrictions. MLB’s 2024 sanctions and the NBA’s Porter ban concern distinct league rules and conduct; do not infer match manipulation where the published record does not support it.
